As home to some of the fastest growing economies in the world, the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA) was enacted to expand U.S. trade and investment with eligible sub-Saharan African countries to accelerate economic growth and promote greater economic integration into the global economy. Yet, trade and investment will not succeed without substantial investments in developing Africa’s human resources.

The Africa-America Institute (AAI) will launch its inaugural Conversations on Africa Series forum with a panel discussion on “AGOA 2015: Positioning Renewal to Ensure Better Human Capacity Training” on Thursday, June 12 at Capitol Hill’s B340 Rayburn House Office Building in Washington, D.C.

Signed into law in May 2000, the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA) expands U.S. trade and investment with 40 eligible sub-Saharan African countries to spur economic growth and promote sub-Saharan Africa’s economic integration into the global economy. The AGOA law is set to expire in 2015. Panelists will explore whether the reauthorization of AGOA can expand educational opportunities and training to strengthen Africa’s human capital and enable trade to flourish.
