University of Western Cape Graduate Program
1989 – 1993
Between 1989 and 1993, AAI administered the University of Western Cape Graduate Program, which sponsored 37 graduate students, who were in mid-program, as well as junior faculty members from this historically black university to study at graduate institutions in the United States for a period of up to six months. Funded by the Ford Foundation and the United Nations Educational and Training Program for Southern Africa, AAI acted as liaison between the South African universities and colleges, funding agencies and the U.S. graduate schools. AAI staff coordinated placement, orientation, academic and social counseling, financial disbursements, visa sponsorship and all other administrative details of the program. While the University of Western Cape Graduate Program ended in 1993, AAI’s South African Black Universities Faculty Skills Enhancement Program (SABUFSEP), which ran from 1993 to 1997 as its successor program, provided scholarships to 70 more black junior faculty members from eight of the historically black universities in South Africa.
