Strategic Technical Assistance for Results with Training Program (START)
Between 2001 and 2007 in partnership with World Learning and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), AAI administered the Strategic Technical Assistance for Results with Training (START) programs for individuals from Kenya, Malawi and Mali. START provided higher education scholarships for individuals earning undergraduate, master's and ph.D. degrees in education, governance and rule of law, horticulture, nutrition and public health. Participants undertook studies at institutions such as Lakeland College, Tulane University, University of Cape Town, University of Hawaii, and Virginia State University.
AAI administered START from its New York office, working directly with USAID program coordinators in Kenya, Malawi and Mali to implement participant training programs, conduct program monitoring and evaluations and provide technical assistance. In addition, AAI worked with USAID in Ghana to provide technical assistance in implementing a human development capacity needs assessment under the START program.
