Starr Foundation African Scholarship Program (SFASP)
1972 – 1980
Between 1972 and 1980, AAI designed and administered the Starr Foundation African Scholarship Program (SFASP), a program that promoted professional development for African professionals in the African insurance industry. Fellowships were awarded to 17 individuals from Nigeria, Kenya, Uganda, Ivory Coast and Senegal for specialized graduate training in actuarial science. AAI activities included participant selection and placement at appropriate U.S. institutions, academic counseling and support services, and organizing practical training programs for all participants during the summer periods and following graduation.
AAI designed SFASP in consultation with African governments and educators to reflect the Starr Foundation’s commitment to strengthening the professional capabilities of African personnel. The majority of participants from SFASP returned to Africa to assume leadership positions in the insurance field.
