Southern African Training Program (SATP2)

1976 – 1994

Between 1976 and 1994, AAI administered the Southern African Training Program (SATP), which was designed to provide development-related training to refugees from Namibia, South Africa and Zimbabwe at African and U.S. universities and post-secondary technical and vocational institutions. Funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), this program awarded over 1,000 scholarships to 400 South Africans, 130 Namibians, and 500 Zimbabweans. Scholarships in Namibia and Zimbabwe were provided before these countries gained independence. AAI administered all aspects of the program including recruitment and selection of candidates, placement, orientation, personal and academic counseling, monitoring of participants, repatriation, and employment.

From 1984 to 1994, AAI sponsored SASPOST, a newsletter for refugee students in the United States. SASPOST served to strengthen networks amongst exiles and provide information about developments in Southern Africa and guidance for repatriation. The final issue was used to reach South African voters in the United States.
