Role of Women's Organizations in Social and Political Affairs

1992 – 1997

Between 1992 and 1997, AAI administered a major five-year project with Nigerian women, entitled The Role of Women’s Organizations in Social and Political Affairs, which was funded by the United Stated Information Agency (USIA) and the Ford Foundation. The project facilitated exchange visits for women professionals from 17 Nigerian non-governmental organizations (NGOs), providing them with the opportunity to learn more about the structures, activities and influence of women’s organizations in the United States. In addition, the exchange visits allowed this group of Nigerian women to develop skills and strategies to make their own organizations more effective.

In addition, four sets of workshops were held throughout Nigeria, which focused on political empowerment, agenda building and advocacy for NGOs. Over 600 women from Nigeria came together to discuss issues, share knowledge and strategies, and develop plans for women's future advancement in Nigeria. Women’s Power and Politics: A Trainer’s Guide, a curriculum and training manual, was prepared as part of the project’s final report.
