Namibian Government Scholarship and Training Program (NGSTP)

In 1999 during his tenure as Minster of Higher Education, H.E. Nahas Angula, Prime Minister of Namibia, and AAI program alumnus, sought AAI's experience and expertise to help design and manage a skills development program for Namibian professionals working in sectors critical to national development. The Namibian Government Scholarship and Training Program (NGSTP) was launched in 2000 in partnership with the Namibian Ministry of Higher Education. Administered by AAI New York in collaboration with its South Africa office the 10-year program provides Namibians with scholarships for academic training at universities in the United States, Europe and South Africa. Under the program students undertake study in areas that have been identified as priorities for Namibia development. These include: mining, agriculture, health, engineering, tourism, land surveying, water resources, the natural sciences, aerodynamics, accounting, and financial services.

AAI is also working with the Namibian Government to leverage the scholarship fund through private sector and other philanthropic support from within Namibia and from the United States.

  • Since 1999, NGSTP has provided scholarships for 70 Namibians (as of December 2007).
  • Currently, NGSTP provides scholarships for 31 Namibians studying in the United States, Europe, and South Africa (as of December 2007).

Building on the success of NGSTP, in 2004 AAI brought 13 Namibian math and science teachers and school administrators to the U.S. to meet with their counterparts in various cities under a U.S. State Department–funded exchange program to improve curricula and teaching methods utilized in Namibian primary and secondary schools.
