International Visitors Program (IVP)

1962 – 2003

Between 1962 and 2003, AAI worked collaboratively with the United States Department of State and the Council of International Visitors to design and implement U.S. itineraries for African participants in the International Visitors Program (IVP). Through administration of IVP, AAI promoted mutual understanding between Africans and Americans by bringing African professionals in contact with their American counterparts and providing opportunities for professional development and informal cultural exchanges.

In AAI’s four decades of administering IVP programs for Africans, over 10,000 mid and senior-level professionals, local government officials, educators, journalists, small business entrepreneurs, non-governmental organization leaders from 50 nations received professional development training. Notable IVP alumni have included the Republic of Botswana's former president H. E. Quest K.J. Masire (1975) and Botswana's current president, H. E. Festus Mogae (1976) as well as Tanzania's first president, Julius Nyerere (1960).
