International Fellowships Program (IFP)
AAI has been the International Partner for the Southern Africa region for the Ford Foundation-funded International Fellowships Program (IFP) since 2002. Reflecting AAI’s commitment to capacity-building, IFP Southern Africa provides opportunities for up to three years of formal graduate-level study leading to a Master’s or Ph.D. degrees. AAI recruits, supports and evaluates IFP Fellows from the Southern Africa region administering this $2.1 million program from its South Africa and Mozambique offices.
The International Fellowships Program (IFP), launched in 2000 by the Ford Foundation, is a $280 million, global program that provides opportunities for advanced study to exceptional individuals with leadership qualities from around the world. IFP Southern Africa will provide scholarships for 300 fellows from Southern Africa to study at prestigious institutions around the world between 2002 and 2007. Upon completion of their studies, fellows will work to further development in their own countries and greater economic and social justice worldwide. Fellows are drawn from diverse backgrounds, and IFP actively seeks candidates from social groups and communities that lack systematic access to higher education. IFP fellows may study any academic discipline related to the Ford Foundation’s three grant-making areas: asset building and community development; education, media, arts, and culture; and peace and justice.
- Since 2002, IFP has provided scholarships for 108 individuals from Mozambique and South Africa (as of December 2007).
- Currently, IFP provides scholarships to 86 fellows from Mozambique and South Africa who are studying at academic institutions in the United States, the United Kingdom, Europe, Australia, Brazil, Mozambique and South Africa (as of December 2007).
- There are 41 Fellows elected to receive scholarships for 2008 from South Africa and Mozambique.
