The Guinea Scholarship Program (GSP)

1960 – 1969

 

Between 1960 and 1969, AAI administered the Guinea Scholarship Program (GSP), which provided scholarships for Guineans to receive undergraduate and technical training in the United States and Canada. Funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), GSP was developed as a U.S. government response to the immediate post-independence needs of Guinea.

AAI activities included participant placement, English language training, orientation,academic supervision, and financial administration of the students’ programs.  Participant selection was made by the National Scholarship Commission in Guinea.  The total number of scholarships granted under the Guinea Program was 192, of which 132 were for university level study and 60 for technical training programs.
