East Africa Junior College Program

1962 – 1964

Between 1962 and 1964, AAI administered the East Africa Junior College Program, which was funded by the Kenyan Government, United States Agency for International Development (USAID), and the participating American universities. Under the East Africa Junior College Program, 60 students from Kenya received associates degrees and practical training in those fields recognized as most critical to Kenya's development: telecommunications, office management and accounting.

AAI’s office in New York administered the program, including participant placement, orientation, and academic and financial supervision. Participants were placed in six institutions within New York State and 10 Junior colleges in the greater Los Angeles area. AAI also coordinated practical training for participants in the program during summer breaks. Upon completion of degree programs, participants returned to Kenya and were placed in middle-level positions in the private and public sectors.
