African Perspectives Discussion Series

AAI’s African Perspectives discussion series convenes AAI alumni and their colleagues from every sector, who are largely mainly Africa-based. The series is designed to elicit a broad cross-section of African viewpoints on topical subjects relevant to African domestic policies and on U.S. policies toward Africa.

The format of AAI’s African Perspectives discussion series includes on-the ground discussion forums (roundtable discussions and focus groups) and interactive on-line dialogues. The published findings of each discussion series, including summaries and analyses of the discussion points, are disseminated to U.S. and African policymakers, news media, the NGO sector and other policy focused groups in the U.S. and Africa.  These publications help shape the direction of future research, the allocation of resources, and the creation of policy in Africa as well as U.S. policy toward Africa. The reports are also used by corporations, foundations, and government organizations that need reliable, informed opinions on topics critical to their operational activities.

Since the program’s inception in 1999, AAI has convened 15 African Perspectives forums in 10 African countries and six via the Internet involving more than 150 participants across 20 countries.

Past African Perspectives topics have included:

  • Effects of the Oil Industry on Human Capacity Building in Sao Tome, 2004
  • African University responses to the HIV/AIDS pandemic, 2003
  • U.S. and Western Policy Responses to the HIV/AIDS pandemic, 2001
  • The African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA), 1999
