Africa Policy Priorities for the 2nd Bush Administration
This seminar explored ways in which the Bush Administration intends to address economic, social, health and political condition on the continent in its final term. Nigeria, Ethiopia, Kenya, South Africa and the Sudan were cited as key to the stability of Africa. Participants included Dr. Cindy Courville, Special Assistant to the President and Senior Director of African Affairs for the National Security Council and Florizelle Liser, Assistant U.S. Trade Representative for Africa.
Continuity, conflict resolution and political stability represent the three-pronged approach to Africa by the Bush I and Bush II Administrations. Dr. Courville and Ms. Liser also stated that the Administration viewed investment and trade as keys to economic prosperity to a continent that continued to be threatened by malaria, HIV/AIDS and tuberculosis. Sierra Leone, Liberia and Cote d’Ivoire represent slow success stories. More success stories are expected as a result of last year’s extension of AGOA III and Millennium Challenge Account (MCA).
