2004 Claude Ake Memorial Awards Scholars’ Reception

In recognition of the life and work of Nigerian visionary Claude Ake, an activist for democracy and a scholar of global standing, AAI honored six scholars at the 2004 Claude Ake Memorial Awards Scholars’ Reception. Funded by the Ford Foundation, the Claude Ake Memorial Awards Program is one of AAI’s African Higher Education and Training (AHET) programs. The awards enable young and mid career African scholars and activists to develop research-based project ideas directed at addressing some of Africa’s most pressing challenges. The six 2004 scholars are studying and finding ways to actively address problems and issues including water availability and adequacy in Soweto, South Africa; women’s’ roles in agricultural productivity and environmental conservation in Nigeria; child-headed households in Luwero District, Uganda; the plight of disabled people in politics and elections in Tanzania; community involvement in forest management in Mafungautsi forest, Zimbabwe; and children’s rights among impoverished youth in Senegal.
