Some of the key events which took place in the 1980s included:
- The 13th Annual African-American Dialogues conference was held in Harare, Zimbabwe, 1983
- The Africa-America Institute arranges first meeting between then ANC President, Oliver Tambo, and representatives of the America business community, 1985
- The 17th Annual African-American Dialogues conference was held in Gaborone, Botswana, 1987
- The Africa-America Institute co-sponsors with the Nieman Foundation at Harvard University a conference on South Africa in the News. The conference brought together six South African journalists and representatives of U.S media outlets, including the New York Times, Time, Newsweek and the LA Times, 1987
