The following AAI programs were established in the 1960s:
- The Guinea Scholarship Program, 1960-1969
- The African Scholarship Program of American Universities, 1961-1975
- Southern African Student Program, 1961-1983
- East Africa Junior College Program, 1962-1964
- East Africa Refugee Program, 1962-1971
- International Visitors Program, 1962-2003
- The African Graduate Fellowship Program, 1963-1997
- African Training Program, 1964-69
- Inter-African Scholarship Program, 1967-1970
- The African-American Dialogues conference series was launched in Nairobi Kenya, providing opportunities for African and American leaders from government and private sectors to discuss matters of common concern in an informal, yet structured setting, 1968
- The Educational Travel Program, which subsequently became part of "Educators to Africa" six-week summer study-travel seminar, sent American teachers to Africa. The program was accredited by Howard University and funded by the U.S. Office of Education, 1969
