AAI IN THE 1950S

In 1953, the African-American Institute was established in Washington D.C, by Horace Mann Bond, president of Lincoln University, Dr. Leo Hansberry, Howard University, Etta Moton, Chicago and William Steen, Washington.

Some key AAI programs and events which took place in the1950’s included:

  • Africa Special Report (later Africa Report) was launched. The Africa Report set out to chronicle for Americans the transformations and struggles that a little-known and poorly understood continent that was embarking on the dawn of its political independence. Throughout its history Africa Report provided in-depth analyses of the continent's political and economic developments until publication was halted in 1995.The first issue of the Africa Report magazine was published in 1956.
  • The U.S.-South Africa Leader Exchange Program established, 1958
