What is AAI?

AAI is a nonprofit, multiracial, multiethnic organization whose mission is to promote enlightened engagement between Africa and America through education, training, and dialogue.  AAI works to build capacity in Africa through administering college, graduate-level, and professional training programs for Africans. AAI also convenes forums that promote greater understanding of Africa among a wide spectrum of Americans and brings together American and African policymakers to focus on issues of mutual concern.

Where does AAI work?

AAI is headquartered in New York City and operates field offices in Johannesburg, South Africa and Maputo, Mozambique. Through its alumni and other networks AAI has an on-the-ground presence in 54 African countries.

What are AAI's major programs?

AAI works through two main program areas:

African Higher Education and Training (AHET) programs provide education and training to skilled African professionals who can build and strengthen institutional capacities in every sector in their countries.

Education Outreach and Policy(EOP) programs include AAI discussion forums, exchange tours and symposia that bridge relations between a wide spectrum of Africans and Americans, promoting African perspectives and helping shape U.S. policy toward Africa.

Who are AAI's alumni?

AAI's alumni are individuals who have participated in a long- or short-term educational programs or forums administered by AAI in Africa and America.

How is AAI funded?

AAI’s work is supported by corporations, foundations, bilateral and multilateral organizations, as well as individuals interested in African development. Please click here to find out how you can support AAI.

Does AAI award scholarships?

AAI does not directly award scholarships or grants to individuals.  Instead AAI works in close partnership with foundations, corporations, government agencies, multilateral institutions, and universities to offer specially tailored educational and exchange opportunities for Africans and study opportunities for a smaller number of Americans in Africa. Notices about the application process for such education, training, and exchange opportunities are posted on partner institutions websites in local media, and through relevant professional associations and institutions.

Does AAI have an internship program?

From time to time AAI hosts interns at is New York office. AAI is not accepting applications for internship positions at this time. If such positions exist in the future, they will be posted on this website.

Does AAI offer volunteer job opportunities in Africa?

AAI welcomes the support of volunteers at many of our U.S. based outreach events. AAI does not have Africa-based volunteer opportunities. If you are interested in working in Africa visit the following websites for information:
